Description:

Located in downtown Washington, just three blocks east of the White House, Warner Theatre was originally built in the early-20th century to house vaudeville performances and silent movies. It was known as the Earle Theatre at this time. The theater was fashioned with a rooftop garden, which nearly became as popular as the performances. The building’s basement also won a lot of attention, despite transforming from a restaurant to a ballroom and then to the Neptune Room.

BY 1945 Earle Theatre was switched to a movies-only policy. The auditorium was redesigned for cinema, and it would be movies only for the next 20 or so years. In 1947 years later, owner Harry Warner (Hollywood’s Warner Bros.) decided the theater should be named after its owner, and thus the new name has remained. By the mid-1970s, surviving a period of dilapidation, the theater was reborn into a concert hall, and even played host to The Rolling Stones in 1978.

But the eclectic music scene that found its home at the theater would also wear down the building. And so it was shut down for three years for more renovating. In 1992 the new-and-improved Warner Theater emerged, opening with a gala that featured Frank Sinatra in what would be his last D.C performance. Ever since, the theater has been riding the train of success, producing not only theater, theatrical, dance, and television presentations, but also national and international recording artists.
