Description:
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is an intriguing and informative place to visit if you have a couple of days to spend in Washington D.C. The museum houses a 50,000-item collection of American furnishings, including silver, china and porcelain. The objects are displayed in 33 rooms, each designed in the style of various states at different points in history.
Children love the "Colonial Adventure" tours, where costumed guides walk through the exhibits describing life in Colonial America. The tours are conducted on the first and third Sundays of the month, but the general 45-minute tours are available weekdays 10am-2:30pm and Sundays 1pm-5pm. Be sure to make reservations in advance for the "Colonial America" tour.
The DAR Museum is known for its period rooms. These rooms are designed in the fashion of a specific period and place. Examples include an 1850 California parlor and a New Hampshire attic filled with toys from the 1800s. Besides the period rooms, the DAR is known for its quilts. Once a month, the museum has a small session for patrons to handle some quilts and have their antique quilts evaluated. Call for reservations.
